Navigating the Path to Starting a Business: The Perfect Idea Does Not Exist

Here I am wanting to start a business and I’m wondering what is the very first thing I do. The very first.

As an analyst my job usually starts with a goal. I am given a goal and then go through a process to figure out how to get to that goal with current resources or advice what resources would need to be added in order to have success. The products that are developed are a direct result of trying to meet the goal.

So in trying to start my very own business, I set a goal and it was blank after that.

The Most Common Advice To Start A Business (That’s Wrong)

So you know when I need answers quickly I asked ChatGPT. So I did. I asked “What is the most common advice on how to start a business. just list the steps by order of popularity”

And it said:-

  1. Develop a business idea.
  2. Conduct market research.
  3. Create a business plan.
  4. Secure funding.
  5. Choose a business structure.
  6. Register your business.
  7. Set up your business location.
  8. Build a team.
  9. Develop a marketing strategy.
  10. Launch your product or service.
  11. Monitor and adjust.

Therefore the most popular advice is to develop an idea.

This is exactly where I get stuck every time. Because the advice makes you believe that an idea is just there waiting to be plucked off a tree.

How do you develop a business idea? (The Wrong Way)

So I ask ChatGPT “How do you develop a business idea?” my guess is that it’s going to tell me something about passion, interest, or skill set. Let’s see.

The result:-

  • Identify your interests and passions.
  • Evaluate your skills and experiences.
  • Identify problems or needs.
  • Conduct market research.
  • Brainstorm and generate ideas.
  • Evaluate feasibility and viability.
  • Refine and narrow down your options.
  • Test your concept.
  • Develop a unique value proposition.
  • Consider scalability and sustainability.

What did I tell you?

So if you are like me, you don’t have any real skill to speak of and any passion I have won’t make a good business (trust me no one wants to hear me sing). While I do believe you can develop almost any skill, I am not naturally talented or an expert in any one thing. Some call it a multi-passionate entrepreneur. I can’t seem to pick just one thing or stick with any idea long enough.

So what do we multi-passionate entrepreneurs do when it seems all the advice may not be for us? Let’s unpack it.

Advice for the multi-passionate entrepreneur

The general advice is to focus on one thing so you will get further ahead. I once heard it illustrated by Hey Jessica that it’s like someone pointed to 3 holes and told you it had a million dollars at the bottom of each hole and you had 1 hour to find it. if you dig in 1 hole for 30mins and didn’t find it and you give up and go to the second hole and gave up after 20 mins and raced to the last hole you would run out of time, no money, and 3 half dug holes.

For a long time after hearing that logical argument, I believed I needed one thing to focus on, and let me tell that my progress came to a complete halt. I tried to get everything I liked doing and wanted to share with the world to fit into this one idea or business. It did not work for me.

4 quotes changed this concept for me and while it was a lot of what they said and wrote I will summarize it here

  1. “The practice is the commitment to the process, not the result” – Seth Godin
  2. “If it doesn’t ship, it doesn’t count.” – Seth Godin
  3. “Everything is figureoutable” – Marie Forleo
  4. “Make unique connections between old ideas” – Tom Bileyu

The point each one made highlighted a flaw in the previous logic of focusing on 1 thing and that is, it assumes that there is a time limit on the creative process of finding an idea, learning and developing takes time. Learning from your mistakes takes time. And as you grow as a person you might realize you can just get 3 workers to dig at the same time and pay them out of the 3 million you would have found. Perspective. There is no one way to do something.

Marie Forleo in an interview (will look back for it and provide a link) said (in my words) that she understood that if she did these different things (tapped into her multi-passionate personality) that she would move slower, her resources would be spread thin but she was okay with that because it would allow her to contribute in a unique way as she grew.

This blends nicely with Tom’s concept that even if all the good and original ideas have been already taken that the true beauty is finding the connection between old ideas to solve new problems (which I will explore in another article).

Accept that you will be wrong

So I bought a URL for every idea I had and got to work trying to communicate what I wanted my business to be about.

Many times I hit a wall and abandoned that URL for something else.

I became very good at building websites quickly and got closer and closer to launching which I will save for another time.

So focus on putting stuff out there and you will see how quickly you realize what you really need to work on, so that by the time your customers find you you will be so neat and polished and the expert you want to be.

All the flavors of experience that will go into making you unique will one day manifest.

Conclusion – Prioritize Practice, Process, and Progress over the Perfect Idea

So to answer the question. The very first thing you should do to start a business is to have a goal. Simple. The idea doesn’t matter as yet. Once you have the goal work on developing “the practice” or the process to be able to “ship” or launch your ideas in the world as quickly as you can. Work on you. Commit to you. And success will show up eventually.
