How To Find Your Niche Even If You Are Not An Expert In Anything

I want to come straight out and say that I do not believe that anyone is “an expert” when it comes to business.

Sometimes the definition assumes that the person has skill and intimate knowledge of the subject but I argue that there are 3 types of experts when it comes to starting a business and finding your niche and all that hard stuff.

Spoiler alert!

The 3 are:-

  1. Trained Expert
  2. Experienced Expert
  3. Visionary Expert

The truth is as entrepreneurs we are a little bit of each which we will refer to as the “Blended Entrepreneur” or “Blended Expert

It is essential to understand that business expertise is multifaceted, and individuals may possess a combination of these qualities. Let’s briefly explore each type:

Trained Expert

This type of expert has acquired knowledge and skills through formal education, certifications, licenses, and professional training. They have a solid theoretical understanding of the subject matter, which can be advantageous in making informed decisions and implementing best practices. Trained experts often have a deep understanding of the foundational principles and frameworks in their field.

Imagine you have a passion for technology and have pursued a formal degree in computer science or software engineering. You’ve completed certifications in various programming languages and frameworks, and you stay up-to-date with the latest developments in the tech industry through continuous learning.

Example Niche: You could become a sought-after app developer, specializing in creating innovative mobile applications for businesses.

Experienced Expert

Experience can be a valuable teacher. The experienced expert may not have formal qualifications, but they have learned from real-world challenges, successes, and failures. This hands-on experience can offer practical insights and the ability to navigate complexities that may not have been covered in formal education. Experienced experts have “been there, done that” and can draw from their encounters to make informed judgments.

Let’s say you deeply love outdoor adventures and have spent years traveling to different remote regions, experiencing various outdoor activities like hiking, mountaineering, and camping. You’ve learned essential survival skills through your experiences.

Example Niche: You could start an adventure travel company, curating and leading guided trips to off-the-beaten-path destinations, drawing on your knowledge and experiences to provide unique and memorable experiences to your customers.

Visionary Expert

A visionary expert is someone who possesses a compelling vision for the future and can inspire and mobilize others to support that vision. While they may not have formal training or direct experience in a particular field, their ability to see possibilities and articulate a captivating future can be a driving force behind a business venture’s success. Visionary experts often excel at communication, leadership, and strategy, enabling them to bring together teams of trained and experienced experts to achieve their vision.

Suppose you’ve always been passionate about sustainable living and environmental conservation. You envision a future where communities are powered by renewable energy sources and actively engage in eco-friendly practices.

Example Niche: You could establish a green consultancy firm that helps businesses adopt sustainable practices, incorporating renewable energy solutions, waste reduction strategies, and eco-conscious operations.

Remember that these categories are not mutually exclusive. Many entrepreneurs possess elements of all three types of expertise, and finding your niche often involves a blend of your formal training, life experiences, and visionary ideas. Here’s an example that combines all three:

For instance, an entrepreneur may have formal business training (trained expert), but they also have experience from running previous ventures or overcoming obstacles (experienced expert). Additionally, they may be visionary, seeing opportunities and trends in the market that others may miss.

Ultimately, business success depends on various factors, including adaptability, learning from different sources, and a well-rounded approach that leverages formal knowledge and practical experience.

You have a formal degree in business administration (trained expert) and have worked in various management roles in the hospitality industry (experienced expert). However, you’ve always been passionate about using technology to revolutionize customer experiences in the hospitality sector (visionary expert).

Example Niche: You could start a tech-driven hotel management company that integrates cutting-edge guest service systems, streamlining operations and elevating the guest experience based on your formal training, industry experience, and visionary approach.

Conclusion

The key is to recognize your unique strengths, interests, and passions. Self-awareness and reflection on your skills and experiences will help you determine which expertise category aligns most with your entrepreneurial journey and business niche. Finding your niche is not just about identifying a market gap but also understanding how your expertise can add value and make a meaningful impact in that specific area.
